Embracing Change

Embracing change

How do you embrace change in your life? Do you freak out at the tiniest bit of fluctuation?  Are you a go with the flow kind of person who acknowledges the change happening and you adjust your sails for your new path?

Personally I used to get high anxiety with big changes in my life. Fear would set in of the unknown, trying to figure out my new normal and I didn’t know how to deal with it. Over the years I’ve gotten better at embracing change, and realizing how much I grow through each experience I’ve had. With change comes growth & opportunity. We have a choice to allow ourselves to indulge in our fears or to look at things from a more positive perspective.

Let’s think about that for a minute. How can we have opportunity when our lives are changing, usually in a scary way? Let’s say you get fired from your job after being with a company for 10 years, as an example. It wasn’t a job you loved, but it paid the bills. On a daily basis for years, you woke up went to work came home and started all over the next day. Then one day your company downsizes and you are left jobless. When something like this happens we go through a cycle of emotions.

LOSS- Which gives us feelings of despair, fear sets in and we almost feel paralyzed.

DOUBT- We resist this change & feel angry and resentful

DISCOMFORT- The anxiety kicks in, we feel confused at what to do next

Then something happens when that fear, anxiety & discomfort sets in. We have a fight or flight response to our lives and what’s happening, and realize we either realize we need to do something about this or we get super depressed and feel sorry for ourselves.

DISCOVERY- We realize things about ourselves through this change. Maybe we weren’t living a life of truth to ourselves and needed a career change. Then we start to get creative and realize the opportunities we now have to reinvent ourselves to some point.

UNDERSTANDING- We start to get a better perspective of why the Universe has brought this change in our lives, and we start to embrace it. We start to have a better understanding and feel more confident in our abilities to move forward.

INTEGRATION- We start to feel more focused on our new goals, and start to implement them into our lives. We start to realize that we are better off where we are going than where we once were.

How does this situation provide opportunity? For one it allows us to self reflect on where we are in the present moment. It allows us to take a good hard look at our life and think about weather we we’re even truly happy to begin with. There’s no doubt that change is scary! Whether it’s ending a relationship, the death of a loved one, or losing a job. Even a small change to your daily routine can throw us off kilter. Typically when we’re blissfully happy we tend to not do much self reflection or inner work on ourselves. So with change comes growth. Can you look back at a situation you have gone through when you thought you wouldn’t be able to survive and see how that situation helped you grow as a person?

Change is inevitable. It’s going to happen whether we want it or not, but we have the power within us to embrace those changes and look at them as opportunities. Signs from the Universe, if you will, to go within and make some changes, rearrange the dark dusty corners inside us to help us live a more joyful life.

These are just my thoughts ….
